Smith's Docks
Smith's Docks in North Shields was in its heyday one of the biggest ship repair yards. It closed in 1990 and has stood derelict since. The intention of this blog is not to write the history of the yard, which I am sure is better done elsewhere, but simply to record changes as they happen while the site is converted from the dereliction to a fully functioning housing development.

Top yard going
No picture to show for this one, but the top yard where Volker Stevin had their cabins is being 'eaten away' by diggers and 'dozers. It would seem that the whole site will slope towards the river, with one or two roads through it. The west wall of Dock 8 is finally due to gain its concrete caps. A long dry spell has allowed work to proceed apace, although this seems to consist of taking soil from one place and dumping it somewhere else.

Landscaping restarts
Drainage work has begun again, and the concrete capping along the river seems near to completion.
There has been no recent work on the docks.
It seems that there are no plans to begin building houses in the foreseeable future

Reports suggest that for now the site is to be 'landscaped'
and a riverside footpath and cycleway constructed.

Work in progress
At last there are signs of progress. A steep bank is being built on the East side and concrete capping is being added to the top of the shuttering against the river.
